The Temptations - Truly For You 1984

The Temptations - Truly For You 1984
The album that preceded this one (Back to Basics) introduced the group's new falsetto lead, Ron Tyson, who is also a remarkable tenor. To fill the departure of Dennis Edwards, this release introduces the electrifying vocals of Ali Ollie Woodson. As talented, competitive and competent as Edwards is, Woodson's sound is not only refreshing to fans of the Tempts, but to the music industry overall.

The smash hit on this release was "Treat Her Like a Lady," a soulful, dance composition that entails some dazzling backgrounds led by Woodson's fiery approach to the melody and the ligthnening squeal of his trademark falsetto. The single was treated very well by the Billboard R&B charts, peaking at number two for two consecutive weeks after 21 thriving weeks. The title track, "Truly for You," retains much of that Temptations magic with its affectionate harp-like guitar rhythms, a romantic confession conveyed in a sincere tone and Ron Tyson's agile, flowing vocals that express the lyrics with honesty and grace. The single made its mark at number 14 on the Billboard R&B charts inside of 13 weeks.

Tracks:

1. Running
2. Treat Her Like A Lady ***
3. How Can You Say That It's Over
4. My Love Is True (truly For You)
5. Memories
6. Just To Keep You In My Life

The SOS Band - Just The Way You Like It 1984

The SOS Band - Just The Way You Like It 1984

The SOS Band - Weekend Girl 1984

The S.O.S. Band hit with a two-million-selling single, "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," their first time out, before having several hit singles written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

The Atlanta, GA-borne band was started in 1977, when keyboardist/vocalist Jason Bryant, saxophonists Billy Ellis and Willie "Sonny" Killebrew, guitarist Bruno Speight, bassist John Alexander Simpson, drummer James Earl Jones III, and lead vocalist Mary Davis formed a group called Santa Monica that played at Atlanta nightclub the Regal Room.

Their manager, Bunny Jackson-Ransom (who later managed Cameo), sent a demo to Clarence Avant, head of Tabu Records. After signing the band to Tabu, Avant suggested that the band work with songwriter/producer Sigidi Abdullah. Abdullah was curious as to why an Atlanta-based band named itself Santa Monica. Keyboardist Jason Bryant replied that the band had an enjoyable concert in Santa Monica, CA. Abdullah then came up with a new band name, the S.O.S. Band, with S.O.S. standing for "Sounds of Success."

Abdullah produced and co-wrote "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" with Harold Clayton, which went platinum, parking at number one R&B for five weeks and peaking at number three pop on Billboard's charts in spring 1980. The debut LP, S.O.S., went gold, selling over 800,000 copies and holding the number two R&B spot for three weeks. While the band was on its world tour, trumpeter/vocalist/percussionist Abdul Ra'oof joined them.

Their second album, Too, went to number 30 R&B in summer 1981. On the band's third LP, S.O.S. Band III, they worked with producer Leon Sylvers III and the Time's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The breaking single, "High Hopes," hit number 25 R&B in the fall of 1982 while the album went to number 27 R&B in late 1982.

On their fourth LP, On the Rise, Jam and Lewis took over the production chores. Scoring with the slammin' number two hit "Just Be Good to Me" and the number five beatbox ballad "Tell Me if You Still Care," On the Rise became their second gold album hitting number seven R&B in summer 1983.

The formula continued working: Just the Way You Like It (including the number six R&B single "Just the Way You Like It") went to number six R&B in fall 1984 and Sands of Time (including the number two R&B hit "The Finest") went gold and hit number four R&B in spring 1986. Many of these releases as well as the sound of early releases of Chicago-borne house music helped to popularize the now-classic sound of Roland drum machine the TR-808.

In 1987, vocalist Mary Davis left the S.O.S. Band to pursue a solo career. The band recorded two more albums: Diamonds in the Raw (number 43 R&B in fall 1989), produced by Eban Kelly and Jimi Randolph, and One of Many Nights, produced by Curtis Williams. In August 1994, former lead vocalist Mary Davis reunited with Abdul Ra'oof and Jason Bryant, and together they reconstructed a new band with the same funky S.O.S. sound, appearing on comedian Sinbad's HBO concert specials and Rhino's various-artists set United We Funk issued October 5, 1999.

The SOS Band - On The Rise 1983

The SOS Band - On The Rise 1983
After a strong start at the beginning of the 1980s, the S.O.S. Band quickly hit that rut which is so sadly common among young bands needing a second shot of gold and, by 1983, they were teetering on the edge of an oncoming oblivion. It is to their ever-lasting credit that not only were they able to pull out of the nosedive, they did it with such aplomb that On the Rise could easily have been retitled Back on Top.

Teaming with hot writing/production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, a completely revitalized S.O.S. Band found themselves firmly on the top of the charts and in the public eye. Hip, slick, and full of dance tricks, the band infused On the Rise with enough ’80s synth sounds to break through in the clubs, while keeping their funk roots intact. Energized throughout, the set hardly slows down for a moment.

From “For Your Love” and the stellar second side opener, “I’m Not Runnin’,” to the Motown soul stylings of “Who’s Making Love,” the S.O.S. Band proved they still had their moves.

The album spun two songs into the top of the R&B charts — “Tell Me if You Still Care” reached number five, while the showstopping “Just Be Good to Me” dropped in at number two, not only becoming one of 1983′s defining songs, but also returning the band to the spotlight in 1991, when the English house band Beats International revisited the grooves across their smash “Dub Be Good to Me.” On the Rise is the sound of a band finding their feet again — and knowing what to do with them once they’d found them.

Tracks:

01. Tell Me If You Still Care 6:59

02. Just Be Good To Me 9:09
03. For Your Love 6:13
04. I’m Not Runnin’ 4:37
05. If You Want My Love 4:19
06. On The Rise 3:30
07. Who’s Making Love 4:16
08. Steppin’ The Stones 3:23

Bonus Tracks:

09. For Your Love (Extended Version) 9:32
10. If You Want My Love (Extended Version) 4:59
11. Just Be Good To Me (Special Version) 8:53

The SOS Band - Sands Of Time 1986
The S.O.S. Band had their last fling with chart success on this 1986 album, which was the swan song for Mary Davis. “The Finest” hearkened back to the glory years, with its jaunty arrangements, collective vocals, and catchy production. The Players Association - We Got The Groove 1980

The Players Association - We Got The Groove 1980

The Players Association - Turn The Music Up

The Players Association is a perfect example of a band that improved as it went along. Their self-titled debut album of 1977 is their least essential, but when We Got the Groove came out in 1980, it was clear that the Association had gone from competent to excellent. This vinyl LP marked the first time that a Players Association album didn't contain any covers of major R&B and disco hits of the late '70s; all of the material was written by leader/drummer/arranger Chris Hills.

The key to excellence in the disco-funk field is finding the perfect groove and working it to death, and Hill's outfit does exactly that on "The Get-Down Mellow Sound," "Dance," "We're Almost There," and the title track. Although the tunes received very little radio airplay, they enjoyed their share of dance club exposure and could easily bring a dancefloor to life. Without question, We Got the Groove is the Players Association's most essential album.

Tracks:

1. We Got The Groove (8:12)
2. The Get-Mellow Sound (7:59)
3. We’re Almost There (6:52)
4. Dance (7:13)

The O'Jay's - Love & More 1984

The O'Jay's - Love & More 1984
Love and More was released as Philadelphia International was experiencing fallout with their distribution deal with CBS. To make matters worse, the label was down to one proven act: the O'Jays. This 1984 album didn't exactly find the guys at a time of climbing the charts -- quite the contrary.

The diminishing returns and poor material of When Will I See You Again lowered the expectations for this album. That's the unfortunate part, because most of Love and More is a thoughtful and mature album. Although the ballads here never let the group down, it's the dance tracks that nearly sink the effort. The so-so "Extraordinary Girl," "Everybody's Dance Krazy," and "Love You Direct" amount to semi-danceable, patently '80s misses. These bombs make the gems of Love and More even more surprising. "I've Got to Fall in Love" and the charming and old-timey "I'm the Kind of Man" attain the elegance and poise of their best work.

The emotional ballad "I Really Need You Now" is reminiscent of their 1979 classic, "Hurry Up and Come Back." "Let Me Show You How Much" and the last track, "Give My Love to the Ladies," have a half-remembered though not totally derivative style and sound. Despite its flaws, Love and More is worth seeking out

Tracks:

1. I've Got To Fall In Love 04:26
2. Extraordinary Girl 05:10
3. I'm The Kind Of Man (every Mother Wants Her Daughter) 03:46
4. Everybody's Dance Krazy 05:30

The Meters - New Directions 1977

The Meters - New Directions 1977
The Meters are an American funk band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Meters performed and recorded their own music from the late 1960s until 1977. The band played an influential role as backing musicians for other artists, including Lee Dorsey and Dr John.

While The Meters rarely enjoyed significant mainstream success, they are considered one of the progenitors of funk music and their work is highly influential on many other bands, both their contemporaries and modern musicians working in the funk idiom. The Meters' sound is defined by an earthy combination of tight melodic grooves and highly syncopated New Orleans "second-line" rhythms under highly charged guitar and keyboard riffing.

Their songs "Cissy Strut" and "Look-Ka Py Py" are considered funk classics. Art Neville, the group's frontman, launched a solo career around the New Orleans area in the mid-1950s while still in high school. The Meters formed in 1965 with a line-up of keyboardist and vocalist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. They were later joined by percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville.

The Meters became the house band for Allen Toussaint and his record label, Sansu Enterprises. In 1969 the Meters released "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Cissy Strut", both major R&B chart hits. "Look-Ka Py Py" and "Chicken Strut" were their hits the following year.

After a label shift in 1972, the Meters had difficulty returning to the charts, but they worked with Dr. John, Paul McCartney, King Biscuit Boy, Labelle, Robert Palmer and others. They appeared on Saturday Night Live on March 19, 1977, during the show's second season. The band broke up later that year.

The Individuals - Together We Can Make Something Happen 1975

The Individuals - Together We Can Make Something Happen 1975
To speak in terms of tradition, consistency and success without the repeated usage of the letter "i" would be an understandably difficult feat for Eddie Thomas. In fact, it has become a tradition for Eddie to produce some very consistent and successful acts whose names begin with the letter "i".

Two groups come to mind are the worlds-renowned and highly acclaimed "Impressions," Eddie"s first successful group, and "The Independents" who rendered the national number one hit "Leaving Me" along with several other million sellers. With all due consideration " The Individuals" have the makings of immortality, and under the skillful guidance of executive producer Eddie Thomas and producer Paul Serrano, have put forth an effort that showcases them as the cream of a fine crop of Chicago talent. The Individuals also helped produce as well as write the songs contained in this album.

The Chi-Lites - Steppin Out 1984

The Chi-Lites - Steppin Out 1984
The group formed in the late 1950s when The Chanteurs (Record, Robert "Squirrel" Lester, and Clarence Johnson) teamed up with Marshall Thompson and Creadel "Red" Jones of the Desideros to form The Hi-lites. Wishing to add a tribute to their home town of Chicago, they changed their name to "Marshall and the Chi-Lites" in 1964. Johnson left later that year, and their name was subsequently shortened to The Chi-Lites.

Record was the group's primary songwriter, though he frequently collaborated with others, such as Barbara Acklin. Their major hits came in 1971 and 1972, with "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl", the latter a Number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. Other transatlantic chart smashes followed, although the output became more fragmented as the group's personnel came and went. For example, bass singer Jones left in 1973, and was replaced in quick succession by Stanley Anderson, Willie Kensey, and then Doc Roberson.

Shortly thereafter, Eugene Record left, and David Scott and Danny Johnson entered. More personnel changes ensued, when Johnson was replaced by Vandy Hampton in 1977. At that point, the group totally disintegrated, but re-formed in 1980, with the mid 1960s quartet of Record, Thompson, Jones, and Lester back together. Creadel Jones left for a second time in 1982, and the group was a trio. Record left again in 1988, and new lead Frank Reed was recruited, considered by many to be one of the best in the group's history.

Reed left for reasons unknown, and singer Anthony Watson would join the group. (Lester took over singing lead on "Oh Girl", while Watson led on their other songs.) By then, the group also featured a female member. Once the hits had completely dried up, further changes took place. Around 1989, Jones returned again, but would subsequently leave. Throughout the 1990s, Watson left twice. Each time Reed took over as lead singer.

In 2002, the group was composed of Marshall Thompson, Robert Lester, Anthony Watson, and Tara Henderson. Watson left for a third time, when Thompson's wife took over as female vocalist. The present day Chi-Lites line-up includes original member Marshall Thompson (leader of the group), Frank Reed, Fred Simon (from The Lost Generation) and Tara Thompson.

Robert Lester [Died:] on January 21, 2010 at Roseland Hospital in Chicago after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 67. The Chi-Lites were inducted into The (R/B Hall Of Fame) in 2000. The Chi-Lites were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005.
